Why I Febfast

I’m taking on FebFast to support mental health awareness and equitable access to care.nMental health needs are often complex, and many people face barriers to getting appropriate support. Alcohol is commonly used to manage or mask psychological distress, but evidence shows this can worsen outcomes over time and delay effective help. Importantly, when someone says they don’t want to be here, it often doesn’t reflect a desire to die — it more commonly reflects overwhelming mental or emotional distress and difficulty explaining or quieting the noise in their head.nMany people hesitate to seek formal care due to cost, limited access, stigma, or concerns about permanent medical records. Even with Mental Health Care Plans, Medicare rebates often cover only part of the cost of psychology services, with upfront fees remaining a significant barrier, particularly during current cost-of-living pressures. Family and friends may want to help but don’t always know how — and that’s okay.nThis is why services like Lifeline are so critical. Lifeline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support, responding to more than one million contacts each year — with someone reaching out approximately every 29 seconds. FebFast helps ensure these vital services remain available so people always have somewhere safe to turn.
